Set sail as your hosts Paul and Sheryl trade in their usual vessel for the uniquely fun “narrow boat”, and journey through the gorgeous canals of England, an area full of beautiful country and rich history.
On this episode of Distant Shores, expert sailors Paul and Sheryl are faced with dense fog, busy canals, and stormy tides before they can arrive in the sunny and fresh Frisian Islands.

Journey across exotic seas as Distant Shores takes you along on their journey to Sweden. Paul and Sheryl get a personal tour of a “haunted” lighthouse, and take part in a medieval festival on the historical island of Gotland.
On this leg of Distant Shores’ journey, Paul and Sheryl discover various ports along Sweden’s coast, and then celebrate the season of crayfish with local Swedish cuisine.
We’re sailing away to West Coast of Sweden where we will explore canals, history and tons of beautiful castles.
Skilled sailors Paul and Sheryl take you on a nautical adventure as they make their way to Germany. First, they must conquer the locks of the canals, and then Distant Shores II sails into Germany to sample delicacies, from cheeses to fish to beer.
Sail around the globe with Distant Shores! Paul and Sheryl take you on a route through the Dutch canals, stopping along the way to learn the culture behind making sails and to sample the fresh fare of the Netherlands, all on their way to Amsterdam.
Discover the exotic locales of the Caribbean on Distant Shores! This sail takes you along the San Blas Islands, as Paul and Sheryl take a discovery dive into the gorgeous reefs of Panama, and learn about the native Kuna Yala tribe.
Season Five
Paul and Sheryl set sail from Chichester Harbour in England and sail to Waterford on the southeast coast of the Republic of Ireland where they learn about the production of crystal before sailing to New Ross to visit the Dunbrody emmigrant ship.
Paul and Sheryl sail north along the coast of the Irish Sea visiting the ports of Dun Laoghaire and Dublin. While waiting out a storm here they visit the Guinness Storehouse and learn about Ireland’s most famous beer.
The Shards begin their visit to Scotland at the Mull of Kintyre and make a trip through the Crinan Canal visiting small inland towns and hiking to archeological sites en route.
Sailors Paul and Sheryl head along the Caledonian Canal through Scotland’s Great Glen. The canal covers Scotland’s most scenic countryside plus several lochs, including Loch Ness where they speak to experts about the legend of the Loch Ness monster.
Heading to Scotland, Paul and Sheryl sail to the Shetland islands. Their first stop is Fair Isle, the most remote inhabited island in the UK. Next they sail to Mainland to the port of Lerwick where local boaters show them life on the island.
Cross the notorious North Sea passing oil platforms as Distant Shores sails to the west coast of Norway. They make landfall at Bergen, then sail south to the homeland of the Viking kings.
Distant Shores sails down Sognefjord, the world’s longest fjord. Then, take a historic train trip and visit a summer Viking camp with Paul and Sheryl.
Leaving Norway, Paul and Sheryl sail back across the North Sea to Scotland where they visit the remote Orkney Islands. In Scapa Flow they explore WWI shipwrecks and meet an archeologist returning to view the work she started 20 years before.
Sailors Paul and Sheryl visit the most remote pub in mainland UK and conclude their visit to Scotland in the home of 8 malt whisky distilleries, where they learn how famous Scotch whiskies are produced.
Leaving Scotland, Paul and Sheryl sail south through the Irish Sea and arrive at the Isle of Man which has been inhabited since 6500 BC. They visit archeological sites around the island while riding out an autumn gale in Peel Harbour.
Paul and Sheryl leave Isle of Man and set sail for France traveling south through the Irish Sea making stops along the west coast of England before making a night crossing of the English Channel.
After a cool wet summer sailing around the UK, Paul and Sheryl now enjoy warmer weather in France. They start their visit by stocking up at the farmers market in Brest, then sail south to the picturesque fishing village of Cameret.
Sampling, cooking and shopping for interesting new foods is part of the pleasure of traveling to foreign lands. In this episode of Distant Shores Paul and Sheryl take you to ports around the globe to explore the delights of exotic markets!
Season Six
Begin a summer voyage through the inland waterways of France, starting with a trip up the River Seine through Normandy. Along the way, learn about the dramatic geology of this region, about Normandy history and castles.
The route into Paris takes us right through the heart of this historic city where we explore some of the traditional sights, get some insights into local customs, and explore the rarely seen “underground” side of Paris.
Join us as we attempt to get our ocean-going sailboat right across France. We navigate the small canals, visit little towns and get the flavor of life inland France.
Continuing through the small french canals we enter the Burgundy region. We travel from Briare along the canal lateral de la Loire and the canal de Centre taking the Bourbonais route and visiting wine making regions of Sancerre and Bourgogne.
On this episode, we travel the Saone River to Lyon and then down the Rhone River passing the historic city of Avignon to reach the Mediterranean Sea.
After crossing France by the small canals we arrive in Port Saint Louis. Then we sail out of the Mediterranean and down the Moroccan coast bound for Rabat, meeting one of the largest pods of dolphins we’ve encountered.
Arrive at the tiny island of Isla Graciosa following a 3-day offshore passage from Morocco. Hike this desert island and then sail to the beautiful volcanic island of Lanzarote before heading to the island of Gran Canaria.
There are over 200 yachts gathered in the harbour of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria to participate in this year’s rally across the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 3000 miles to the Caribbean.
We are sailing 2,800 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to St. Lucia in the Caribbean. Rough weather characterizes this passage, but we arrive in just 15.5 days with the strong winds. Then we explore the island of Saint Lucia.
Set sail to the British Virgin Islands for the BVI Spring Regatta. While we’re there, we visit popular beaches, dive on the wreck of the Rhone, swim the vibrant reefs, attend a full moon celebration and enjoy the amenities of a private island resort.
Join Paul and Sheryl Shard as they sail south through the Caribbean, stopping at Saint Maarten for Carnival before making landfall at Dominica to learn about this “nature island”, home of waterfalls, rivers and volcanic hot springs.

Take in the splendours of Carnival and participate in some of the rituals. We will learn about the local chocolate industry, get tips on keeping fit on a boat, then sail north to explore the Grenadian islands of Petite Martinique and Carriacou.

One of the most beautiful island groups in the Caribbean – The Grenadines. Dive the crystal waters of Union Island and party ashore with a fisherman entertainer. In the Tobago Cays, we explore the Marine Park and sample fresh lobster on the beach.

We meet up with a fellow filmmaker cruising the Caribbean with his parrot, and dive deep testing our anchor. Then we upgrade the boat for an Atlantic crossing before setting sail for 17 days on the high seas.
Last time on Distant Shores we set sail from the Caribbean and arrived in the Azores at Flores. This time we’re looking forward to exploring remote and lovely Flores, then sailing on to the sailor’s mecca of Horta.

This time on Distant Shores, we go out sailing in the Strait of Gibraltar. We sail along the Spanish Mediterranean coast to the Balearic islands before returning to Morocco at Tangier and heading off shore to the Canary islands.
This time on Distant Shores, we’re doing our first major ocean crossing on the new boat. We’ll stop at the Cape Verde islands, before the big jump, 2200 miles onto Antigua in the Caribbean.
